Explanation of Design: This site seems easy enough to access and get information but the trouble comes when one goes to pay and there is no secure way of making a payment. According to Shneiderman novices work best within tight parameters of simple actions but as they gain more know how and experience, so does their desire for more extensive functionality (2010). After spending a lot of time getting information and then going through the necessary steps to make payment, one finds that this site becomes unfriendly as it is not protected. This task represents the bottom layer or level that Shneiderman mentions with regards to features and their complexities. You want a site to be able to offer a user, at minimum, the completion of a process. The pop up windows also appear to complicate the process, if not delay it.

Design Issue: The user has to go through a long process of selection and when they get to the part where payment is needed, it is unfriendly with no provision of security. As a business, you would want your customers to purchase your goods and return for more. The frustration and fear of lack of security one faces with this site, causes users not to return, no matter what savings benefits are. On a business website, payment should be secure.

Recommendation for design improvement:
"One of our goals is to encourage users to translate their internal fears into out-raged action (Shneiderman, 2002). Instead of feeling guilty when they get a message such as SYNTAX ERROR, users should express their anger at the interfacedesigner who was so inconsiderate and thoughtless. Instead of feeling inadequate or foolish because they cannot remember a complex sequence of actions, they should complain to the designer who did not provide a more convenient mechanism or should seek another product that does." (Shneiderman, p 40) It is the designer's responsibility to make a site secure for the user to eliminate the fear. Below is a guideline taken from ehow for how to make your website secure.

Things You'll Need

  • SSL certificate

Instructions

    • 1Contact your web hosting company to generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) form. Ask for a copy of the CSR to be emailed to you as you will need it later on.
    • 2Decide on the company you would like to purchase an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate from. Many web hosting companies sell SSL certificates. You can also purchase SSL certificates from companies such as VeriSign, Register.com and GoDaddy. For the maximum security results, you should purchase a 128-bit encryption certificate.

    • 3Fill out the online application for the SSL certificate. You will need to enter the name and contact information for the individuals who handle the technical and administrative aspects of your website. You will also have to enter information from your CSR that was received in Step 1.
    • 4Proceed to the payment link to purchase the SSL certificate.
    • 5Wait until your request for an SSL certificate has been approved. This can take a few days. An email will be sent to the technical contact person you listed in Step 3 once you have been approved. The email will contact the SSL certificate along with installation instructions.
    • 6Install the SSL certificate on your website to make it secure.
